This Monstrous Law! Robert and Harriet Purvis and the Fugitive Slave Act – Dramatic Presentation

Saturday, June 6, 2026, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Byberry Friends Meeting, 3001 Byberry Road, Philadelphia PA 19154

Join us for a recreation of the historic meeting that took place at Byberry Hall on October 18, 1850, to protest the newly passed Fugitive Slave Law which compelled local citizens to assist in capturing runaways. Living history performers portray abolitionists Robert Purvis and Harriet Forten Purvis, who responded to this inhumane law by rallying local Byberry citizens to defy it. Concert singer, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, “The Black Swan,” lends her melodic support to the proceedings.
